Special NeedsButter Cup is a Special Needs pet with FIV Positive

Hi my name is Butter Cup!  My sisters and I were born in someone’s garage and the nice people took us inside to socialize us since our mom wasn’t very friendly.  Us girls on the other hand are super friendly and love everyone!  We love to play with all sorts of toys, sit in our foster mom’s lap all at the same time so she can’t move and we purr up a storm all the time!  Everyone who meets us absolutely loves us!  Can you blame them, just look at our cute little faces!

You are probably wondering why we are considered “special needs” so here’s the scoop. When we were relinquished to KAR at 8 weeks old we were tested for Feline Leukemia and FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus).  Sadly at the time we all tested FIV positive. Luckily our new foster mom works at the vet who tested us so she knows all about FIV.  She says that we tested FIV positive due to antibodies that we received from our mother’s milk and that it was the antibodies that were detected on the test.  Kittens like us that are tested at a young age can potentially falsely test positive for FIV which we hope is the case.  We definitely need to be retested at 6 months of age to determine if we are truly FIV positive.

So what does this mean for us?  Well it means with proper vet care we can and will live a long happy life just like cats that are not FIV positive!  We can even live in a household with cats that are FIV negative and never transmit the disease to them.  FIV is ONLY spread from cat to cat through deep puncture wounds.  It is very rare for cats to get FIV from just being around infected cats, from sharing food bowls, or from a person touching a FIV-positive cat and then touching a FIV-negative cat.

For information on FIV check out this website: www.bestfriends.org/resources/fiv-cats-faqs

Since there are four of us we would love to find forever homes that would adopt two of us together. This way we will have a buddy and not be lonely when you go to work! Your life would be filled with lots of purrs and snuggles!   We would love to find our forever home in time for Christmas!
