Kalamazoo Animal Rescue
received a call one evening in May
from an animal rescue volunteer in St. Joe County concerning 12
puppies whose mother had just died. They were three weeks old
and still nursing. They had not had any milk since noon. It was
an emergency situation.

The volunteer brought all
the puppies to Pet Supplies Plus in
Kalamazoo. They were divided up between 3 foster families -
2 KAR families and 1 SPCA family, each taking 4 puppies.

Bottle feeding commenced and
twelve thirsty puppies slurped down
a large quantity of puppy formula. They all made it through the first
night,
a good
sign. The KAR pups were divided up between more
foster
homes, so we could spread the bottle-feeding load.

Some were so full of worms
they could not keep the puppy formula
down
and trips to the experts at Texas Corners Veterinary Hospital
were needed to keep them alive.

There were many sleepless
nights at first but all the puppies kept
pulling through.

After two weeks of puppy
formula, they were ready for "mush"
and the expert bottle feeders within KAR turned them over to
other foster homes ready for lively young pups.

First shots were
given, then second shots, socialization continued
and they kept growing.

The mother was a black lab
and the father was unknown. The black/
brown/white coloring of some pups reminds people of Bernese
Mountain Dogs, some have more of the Rott coloring, some are all blond.

On June 17th, 2005 we
arranged for all the pups to be reunited at
the store. You can see below all 12 pups together, held by the foster
homes, other volunteers and members of the public who just
happened to be in the store at the time. They are nine weeks old
as of this date.

It was quite a sight to see
- 12 healthy and energetic pups. Before long
some got tired though, as shown below.

A BIG thank you to Barb K,
all in KAR and SPCA who helped
rescue these puppies and raise them, and to the Veterinary
professionals that helped us. It was an amazing team effort.
