Adopt a Rescue Animal

Adopting one animal saves two lives.

Kalamazoo Animal Rescue is a closed intake (AKA “no kill”) rescue. We do not euthanize animals due to space or resource constraints. However, once we are out of space or resources, we have to say no to intake requests until some of our animals are adopted.

Every dog or cat adopted from us saves two lives: theirs, and the life of the next one that needs help. Please help us say “yes” to more animals!

Why adopt from Kalamazoo Animal Rescue?

We are often asked why people should adopt from KAR or another animal welfare group instead of getting a “free” animal on Facebook.

"Free" puppies and kittens aren't really free!

You’ve probably seen puppies or kittens advertised as “free to a good home.” Unfortunately, those “free” pets typically have not received any vetting. Providing veterinary care for a new puppy or kitten quickly adds up to hundreds or thousands of dollars.

Our adoptable animals are:

  • Spayed or neutered
  • Microchipped with lifetime chip registration
  • Vaccinated with age-appropriate vaccines
  • Dewormed
  • Tested for FIV/FeLV (cats) or heartworm and tickborne diseases (dogs)
  • Treated for any other medical needs before adoption

Our adoption fees help us cover these costs and many others so that we can keep helping animals in Kalamazoo and surrounding areas.
